8 dead in New Mexico Bus Crash
When it comes to the consequences of an accident, buses, semi-trucks and tractor trailers are some of the most dangerous vehicles on the road. These vehicles are extremely heavy and difficult to maneuver, and when a driver has a lapse in concentration or loses control, the results can be disastrous for drivers, passengers and other motorists. Sadly, but perhaps unsurprisingly, many of these accidents are fatal.
Thursday afternoon around 12:30pm a Greyhound passenger bus in northwestern New Mexico and a commercial truck hit head-on causing major injuries to passengers. Authorities stated that the death toll rose on Friday when the medical investigator’s office said it received one more body from the hospital. A California-based trucking company and one of its drivers are being accused of negligence after eight people were killed in a crash, although there is no exact count of how many passengers were injured about of the 49 seated. Witnesses saw dozens of passengers trying to climb out of windows of the bus after the crash on Thursday off Interstate 40.
I-40 was shut down for nearly eight hours according to KRQE. The New Mexico State Police said the semi was headed east on freeway Thursday afternoon when one of its tires blew. They said that sent the rig, which was carrying produce, across the median into oncoming traffic, where it slammed into the greyhound bus. Video footage from the scene showed debris scattered about the roadway and emergency responders at the scene. The front of the Greyhound bus was severely damaged during the crash.
