The Texas Railroad Commission was created in 1891 to prevent discrimination in railroad charges and establish tariffs. In 1919, the Commission was also given jurisdiction over Texas oil and gas production.
Today, the Texas Railroad Commission regulates Texas exploration and production of oil and natural gas. Its responsibilities include preventing waste, protection of surface and subsurface water, and ensuring mineral interest owners have an opportunity to develop their interests.
The Texas Rail Road Commission also tracks Texas oil and gas production and ensures that it follows monthly allocations. It also sends field inspectors to visit wells and facilities to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
