Your Back Is Critical

Your back is critical to everyday activities. It is made up of sensitive bones, muscles, ligaments, and other tissues that stretch from your pelvis to your neck.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

Your spinal cord carries nerve impulses between your brain and the rest of your body.

Trauma to the spinal cord results in the loss of feeling or mobility.

Complete spinal cord injury is when the victim loses all ability to feel or move body parts below the level of injury. In incomplete spinal cord, the victim has some feeling.

Paraplegia involves paralysis of the legs and lower body. Quadriplegia and tetraplegia involve the loss of use of all four limbs and the torso.

What Are the Most Common Back Injuries?

Your back is particularly susceptible to injury in a car accident, slip and fall accident, or work injury. These injuries can dramatically reduce the quality of life and make it impossible to work.

Common back injuries include:

  • Fractured vertebrae – a broken or dislocated vertebra leaves behind bone fragments that pinch and damage your nerves. This can cause pain and make it difficult to walk or use your arms and legs.
  • Herniated disks – the 26 disks in your back contain fluid that cushions your vertebrae and helps you move. Accidents can rupture those discs, irritating nerves and causing intense back pain or sciatica, which is pain or weakness that often extends from your lower back down to your toes.
  • Sprains – when the ligaments of your back are stretched or torn, the results can be devastating.

Common Types of Back Surgeries

Severe back injuries may also require surgery or other medical procedures. Examples include:

  • Epidural injections – steroids are injected into the epidural space in the spine to reduce pain and inflammation. This is usually combined with other treatments and physical rehabilitation.

  • Facet joint injections – local anesthetic and steroids are injected, proving short-term relief.

  • Sacroiliac joint injections – used to treat lower back pain associated with the joints that connect the sacrum to the hips.

  • Lateral interbody fusion—fusion surgery performed through the side of the body.

  • Pedicle screws for spinal fixation – procedure by which screws are placed at two or three consecutive spine segments, and then a rod is used to connect the screws.

  • Percutaneous lumbar discectomy – a procedure involving a skin incision to remove disc material that is pressing on nerves.

  • Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PPV) – this involves injecting cement into the vertebral bodies.

  • Spine cages—typically an alternative to pedicle screws, this involves inserting titanium cages into the disc space to permit bone grafts to grow and thereby facilitate spinal fusion.

  • Spinal fusion – bone from your pelvis is used to bridge the vertebrae that are next to each other. The bone grafts then grow and fuse the vertebrae together.

  • Trigger point injections – acute trauma can lead to spasms and inflammation at “trigger points,” and this procedure involves injection of anesthetic and steroids in an effort to relieve that pain.

Spinal Cord Injury Treatment

Many spinal cord injuries are irreversible. With aggressive therapy, however, some victims are able to regain movement.

Surgery may be required to stabilize your spine or remove bone fragments.

Rehabilitation using new technologies such as electrical stimulation devices, functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems, and robotic gait training (such as ReWalk) may help you get back some mobility. After an accident in Texas, you shouldn’t have to worry about how you’re going to cover ongoing medical costs. Let a reliable Houston personal injury attorney with experience in spinal cord and back injury cases help you secure the financial compensation you deserve.

Nick Morrow and John Sheppard are the best. I was paralyzed in a work injury. Several other lawyers turned down my case. Morrow & Sheppard hired expensive experts, took dozens of depositions, and proved my case. I saw them in court against a team of defense lawyers, and the defense lawyers didn’t stand a chance. Morrow & Sheppard took my case all the way when nobody else would. Now my family is set up for life. Throughout the process, they kept me updated and made me feel like I was more than a number. I still talk to Nick to this day. Morrow & Sheppard exceeded my expectations in every way, and I cannot recommend them enough. If you are injured at work, call Morrow & Sheppard.read more

John Sheppard and Nick Morrow were two of the brightest stars in my law school class and my class of lawyers at Fulbright & Jaworski, one of the most elite and prestigious law firms in Houston and Texas. I have known both of them for well over a decade now and throughout that time they have both always lived up to the highest standards of intellect, tenacity, and professionalism. My experience with John, at Morrow and Sheppard, during my company’s litigation was better than I could have imagined (considering the circumstances of being involved in litigation). What stood out to me the most, was John’s tenacity in preparation. I later realized this came from two places, one he didn’t want to lose and two (and most importantly) he CARED so much about me getting justice. I cannot stress this enough, when you are dealing with a lawyer that truly cares, then all of the other stresses I had around the case seemed to go away. I was always kept up to date with what was going on in our case, and he always made it very clear he was just an email or call away! In addition to these attributes, he also knows the law and is willing to fight for what is right! It would be tough to find another lawyer that is as highly effective, skilled, knowledgeable, ethical and has such an impeccable reputation (which is well deserved). I would recommend Morrow and Sheppard to anyone seeking out a law firm, in the event they needed counsel.read more
