Lakewood Fiery Crash Leaves Multiple People Dead

April 26, 2019

The truck plowed into stopped traffic along Interstate 70 near Denver hitting several cars and trucks on Thursday, April 25, 2019, igniting a fiery and deadly crash.

Twenty-eight vehicles were involved in the crash: four of them semis and 24 cars, killing multiple people, Lakewood Police Department Agent Ty Countryman told reporters on Friday.

Six people were taken to hospitals. Police did not have an update on the severity of their injuries or their conditions.

The truck driver, who was behind the whole of a flatbed truck loaded with lumber is in custody and will be charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide, police said.

Countryman said there’s no evidence of drugs or alcohol in the crash.

Investigators say they are looking at social video from the scene that captured footage of a semi traveling at a high rate of speed past stopped cars just seconds before the collision. They were looking into brake failure or mechanical problems prevented the semitrailer from stopping.
