Understanding Your Neck

Many people do not realize how important the neck is to everyday life. A serious neck injury, as seen by our Houston personal injury lawyers, is often a completely disabling source of pain.

Your neck is composed of several parts that must work together for your body to function properly. These include:

  • The cervical spine, which includes several bones and joints.
  • Seven fluid-filled cervical discs and 23 total discs in the spinal column that separate the cervical vertebrae and absorb shock when you move.
  • Muscles and ligaments that hold the cervical spine together.

Types of Neck Injuries

Slip and fall accidents, work accidents, car accidents, and trucking accidents often result in neck injuries. The neck area is a sensitive part of the body and even seemingly minor accidents can result in a variety of injuries, including:

  • Cervical dislocation – when bones in the neck move out of position and render the spine unstable.
  • Herniated disc – the fluid inside the discs is pushed out, causing damage to nearby nerves.
  • Neck fracture – a break in a cervical bone often caused by a traumatic accident.
  • Spinal cord injuries (SCI) – an injury to the third vertebrae or above can cause death or result in the injured person requiring a respirator to breathe.
  • Strains and sprains – injuries to muscles and ligaments often caused by trauma, accidents, or heavy lifting required by an employer.
  • Whiplash and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) – usually caused when the injured person’s head is hyperextended and quickly thrown forward. This serious injury can cause a variety of symptoms including dizziness, inability to sleep, pain, tingling, and weakness. It is well-documented that whiplash and WAD often do not materialize until days after an accident.

Injuries to Particular Areas of the Neck

The severity of a neck injury is often related to the vertebrae (C1-C7) that have been injured. For example:

  • C1-C3 vertebrae injuries: the diaphragm may no longer function, which can result in death or require the use of a ventilator to breathe.
  • C4 vertebrae injuries: loss of shoulder and biceps function.
  • C5 vertebrae injuries: wrists, hands, shoulders, and biceps may not function.
  • C6 vertebrae injuries: hands and wrists may not function.
  • C7 vertebrae injuries: arms, fingers, and hands may not function.

Neck Injury Treatments

The type of treatment required for a neck injury depends on its location and severity. Some examples of possible treatment include:

  • Cervical discectomy – a surgeon enters the front of the neck and removes the herniated disk and any aggravating bone debris, then fills the open space with a piece of bone from a donor or somewhere else on your body; the bone piece or “graft” then grows and fuses the vertebrae together.
  • Cervical spinal fusion – when two vertebrae grind together, this surgical procedure joins them together through a bone graft or metal implant.

  • Epidural steroid injection (ESI) – a steroid is injected to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. This procedure does not cure the underlying issue; it provides only temporary relief prior to rehabilitation or other treatment.

  • Halo or neck brace – used to stabilize the injured person’s neck and keep it from moving.

  • Laminectomy — relieves nerve and spinal pressure through the removal of the bony plates that cover the spinal cord (laminae).

  • Laminoplasty – used to treat spinal stenosis by enlarging the spinal canal.

  • Rehabilitation and occupational therapy

A neck injury can be debilitating. Treatment can be very expensive.

If your neck injury was caused by the negligence of another person or a company, you may be entitled to seek compensation from that person or company to compensate you for the costs of treatment, as well as damages for pain and suffering and lost income. This is often true even if you had a pre-existing neck injury that was aggravated or made worse by your injury.

Nick Morrow and John Sheppard are the best. I was paralyzed in a work injury. Several other lawyers turned down my case. Morrow & Sheppard hired expensive experts, took dozens of depositions, and proved my case. I saw them in court against a team of defense lawyers, and the defense lawyers didn’t stand a chance. Morrow & Sheppard took my case all the way when nobody else would. Now my family is set up for life. Throughout the process, they kept me updated and made me feel like I was more than a number. I still talk to Nick to this day. Morrow & Sheppard exceeded my expectations in every way, and I cannot recommend them enough. If you are injured at work, call Morrow & more

My experience with John, at Morrow and Sheppard, during my company’s litigation was better than I could have imagined (considering the circumstances of being involved in litigation). What stood out to me the most, was John’s tenacity in preparation. I later realized this came from two places, one he didn’t want to lose and two (and most importantly) he CARED so much about me getting justice. I cannot stress this enough, when you are dealing with a lawyer that truly cares, then all of the other stresses I had around the case seemed to go away. I was always kept up to date with what was going on in our case, and he always made it very clear he was just an email or call away! In addition to these attributes, he also knows the law and is willing to fight for what is right! It would be tough to find another lawyer that is as highly effective, skilled, knowledgeable, ethical and has such an impeccable reputation (which is well deserved). I would recommend Morrow and Sheppard to anyone seeking out a law firm, in the event they needed more
