UPDATE – Two Workers Killed at Spitzer Industries and Another Injured

April 5, 2019

870 out of 100,000 workers will suffer some kind of work injury this year.  Workplace injuries are commonly broken into 7 principal categories, which include:

  • Slips and Trips
  • Moving Machinery
  • Fire and Explosions
  • Overexertion
  • Repetitive Strain Injury
  • Falling Objects
  • Falling from Heights

Unfortunately, for one reason or another, some employees will pay what President Lincoln called the “last full measure of devotion.”  They literally give their lives for the work that they do.

Worked to Death

In the past few weeks, Houston has lived in the shadows of the chemical fires at the Intercontinental Terminals Company and KMCO chemical plants.  If that weren’t enough to put you on edge, yon April 4, 2019, two men were killed and another was injured when a piece of “heavy equipment flipped onto workers at a site in east Harris County” at a Spitzer Industries site.

Harris County Sherriff’s deputies responded to the scene around 9:00 p.m.  The officers said the equipment “trapped the two workers.”  One worker died at the scene and the other worker was Life Flighted to the hospital—where he succumbed to his injuries and died.

No Comment from Spitzer Industries

Twelve hours have passed and there is no comment from Spitzer Industries as to how all this happened.

Was Spitzer Industries Following Industry Safety Practices

Spitzer Industries touts itself as a “leading custom steel fabricator providing engineered packages, heavy vessels, columns and towers, and structural steel to the production, midstream, subsea and petrochemical sectors” that “deliver[s] high-quality, custom-designed products safely and on schedule.”

It is unclear if the work done by Spitzer Industries was in line with industry safety practices.  All we know is that reports indicate that two people are dead and one person is injured as a result of heavy equipment flipping onto workers.

The industrial accident attorneys at Morrow & Sheppard LLP battle to remind companies that they have a duty to provide people with a safe place to work.
