Constructed in 1929, Shell’s Deer Park refinery in Texas is a significant facility operated by Shell, a subsidiary of a leading international oil company. The Deer Park Refinery is a joint venture between Shell and Pemex, Mexico’s national oil company, and it ranks as the sixth-largest refinery in the United States.

The refinery has a history of severe accidents, including:

On May 5, 2023, a massive fire has been reported after an explosion at a Shell refinery plant near Deer Park.
On January 22, 2014, a fire broke out at Shell’s Deer Park refinery.
In November 2010, another fire occurred at the refinery, injuring multiple people, including first responders. The affected unit was subsequently shut down.
In September 1979, several workers suffered critical injuries in a tanker explosion at the Deer Park facility.
